Intro to Nosework
This class is designed for the dog that has not yet been introduced to odor. Using primary rewards (food or a special toy), we let your dog discover the joy of searching. Emphasis is on building the foundation of independence, confidence, and drive that will carry forward when odor is introduced. This class is a prerequisite for introduction to odor.
Intro to Odor
In this class, we will introduce dogs to odor (birch, anise, and clove) and continue to focus on foundational training. At least one series of intro to nosework is a prerequisite
Continuing Nosework
This class is for any dog that has been introduced to odor. Dogs of any level are welcome and searches will be appropriate for their experience. Pairing of odor with a primary reinforcer is both allowed and encouraged when appropriate.
Emphasis in the CONTINUING NOSEWORK class is on increasing your dog’s skills, confidence, drive and independence so your dog learns to understand and solve problems with minimal guidance. Handlers will observe dog behavior as it relates to the search, learn to recognize when a assistance is needed (or not), practice leash handling, and work towards becoming a team with your dog. Hide placement, environmental effect, search strategies and other factors affecting a search will also be discussed.
Classes are based on the National Association of Canine Scent Work (www.NACSW.net) training protocols. Dogs will run 2-3 searches per class.
Class size: 6 dogs, limited to a maximum of 7 dogs.
Dogs will need to be crated in your car between searches. Only one dog at a time will be in the search area. This class is suitable for dog reactive dogs. This class is not suitable for dog aggressive or people aggressive dogs. Handlers are required to observe other dogs as they work in order to improve their observation skills and handling techniques.
