Location and hotels: Dog Days, Vancouver, WA

About Denise:

Denise's positive training methods are widely recognized for producing dogs with exceptional attention, accuracy and enthusiasm for their work. She does more than teach you to train your dog in specific exercises. She teaches you to understand the work from your dog's point of view, so you become a problem solver for your dog.

She places special emphasis on handler body mechanics in teaching, to assist the handler in communicating expectations while teaching the dog to self-correct without verbal or leash help. This "body reining" approach results in increased attention and awareness in the dog as they adjust and respond to subtle handling.

Denise has an affinity for working with puppies, dogs that have had harsh training in the past, and dogs needing retraining on poorly-taught exercises.

A twenty-five year veteran of training, competing, and titling in schutzhund, obedience, tracking, agility, conformation, and herding who has earned multiple HITs in obedience and schutzhund along the way, Denise regularly teaches obedience for both the AKC ring and schutzhund field. She breeds working Belgian Tervuren under the kennel name "Sprite."

SEMINAR TOPICS:

This seminar is well suited to those competing in agility, obedience, flyball, schutzhund, freestyle, and any other sport which values intensity, endurance, and focus in a competitive environment.

Saturday, July 26: BUILDING DRIVE AND MOTIVATION

The first day will appeal to people in all dog sports. Denise will examine canine "Drives and Motivators". Participants will learn to play with their dogs using food, tug, retrieve, and relationship. This will be a 1-day condensed version of the seminar Denise did here last December; the emphasis will be on defining and using drives and play for performance dogs. People who attended the December seminar will get a lot out of hearing it a second time, and new folks will get enough detail to be able to follow along on the second day where specific training techniques are used.

Sunday, July 27: OBEDIENCE PERFORMANCE: NOVICE, OPEN, and UTILITY

The second day will be a systematic walk through of Novice, Open and Utility, with working dogs representing each level. A working dog could either have a problem with a particular exercise, or maybe just needs to know how to start or progress a specific exercise. Lecture will look at a variety of options for teaching each exercise, with dogs in the working spots used to demo the components described.

The second day will have both individual and group work.

FORMAT: The presentation will be lecture interspersed with working dogs individually or in groups with everyone watching each dog session. The lectures continue in sequence from day 1 thru day 2, so if you attend on day 2 you should have either attended one of Denise's other seminars or day 1 of this seminar.

Dogs: There will be a limit of 10 working dogs each day. If you want a working spot, indicate which day you would like. You MUST pick a day as there will be different working dogs each day. In the case of an excess of interest, a random draw may be used to select the working teams. If you have a working spot on day2, you MUST attend on day 1 day as an auditor. Working teams on Sunday might have one or more specific exercises or issues to work on at their level (Novice, Open, or Utility).

Quiet, well-behaved dogs are always welcome to attend with auditors.

Auditing spots are limited to 40.

Private Lessons July 25 by appt.

There will be some time for private lessons on the Friday before the seminar. Check the box on the registration form if you'd like to be in the lottery draw for a private and you will be contacted for further details prior to the draw. Rates: $40 per half-hour.
